When I first started getting into photography in high school, I was obsessed with gear.

I used to be able to regurgitate every stat about every camera on the market. I’d spend hours reading camera reviews and committing to memory how many frames per second the new Nikon had.

I’d go to camera stores to talk to sales reps and impress them with my worthless knowledge.

And then I just stopped caring.

And you know what? I started into enjoy photography more. And I started to like the photos I took even more.

By dumping my mind of useless camera specs, I could fill it with ideas and knowledge that would actually make me a better photographer.

When you spend your time worrying about the latest tech, you become nothing more than a camera operator – not a photographer, and certainly not an artist. And that’s why nobody values what you do.
